KIDS ROAD BIKES

One of the things that we specialize in is building Kid sized road bikes.  I started building Kid's bikes many years ago when my wife and I struggled with how to share our love of cycling with our children.  We started out as many other people do; pulling them in a trailer, then buying them their first tricycles, on to 16" BMX style bikes, and then to 20" BMX and mountain bikes.  This was all great fun and my kids learned a lot and developed their riding ability.  But, we all wanted more.  I wanted to share the open road with them, the thrill of higher speeds, the great fun of group rides, and the satisfaction that comes with completing longer rides. My kids wanted to "come with" and their faces pulled at my heart strings when they were asked to stay home.

But taking kids on long rides can be a tough thing. You're typically left with less than ideal choices such as a trailer bike, tandem, or letting them struggle along on their "kids" bike.  Have you ever lifted a typical "kids" bike?? They weigh a TON!!!  Just think about it; we adults have access to bikes that weigh 17 lbs and have 120 psi tires, while kids are stuck with a 50 lb BMX or Mountain bike that have 2" wide knobby tires!!!  My fatigue level goes up just thinking about it!  I searched, but could not find any decent lightweight bikes that were designed and sized for kids.  So, I started building them. And what a difference they make! My kids took their cycling to a whole new level.  15 mile rides at 15 or 16 miles an hour became everyday occurrences.  35 and 40 milers became routine.  In 2003 I took my eight year old son, Bryan with me on RAGBRAI  (As you may know, RAGBRAI is a 500+ mile rolling celebration of cycling, during which over 12,000 people cross the state of Iowa on bicycles.)  Even though we had a support vehicle with us and he wouldn't have had to ride a mile if he didn't want to, my son put over 320 miles on his Anderson Kid's Road bike!!  That is the difference that a high quality light weight bicycle can make!!
